Rich Abele – Adventurer and U.S.S. Iowa Volunteer
Rich is a global adventurer with a passion for international travel. To-date he has visited over 200 countries and destinations on all seven continents. Significant adventures include reaching both the North and South Poles, transiting the Northwest Passage, completing the Mt. Blanc, Torres del Paine and Huayhuash Circuits, treks to the Everest Basecamp and the Indian Himalayas, climbing the two tallest peaks in Africa, and trekking the Milford and Routeburn Tracks in New Zealand. Various cruise expeditions have also taken him to S. Georgia, the Ross Sea and islands in the Southern Ocean as well as extensive travel in Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, the Mideast, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific Oceans.
During his 32 year career at Rockwell International and The Boeing Company, he worked in government contracting and export compliance on the B-1B bomber and C-17 aircraft transport programs. Rich served in the US Navy with two tours in Vietnam and retired in 1995 with the rank of Captain.
When not traveling, Rich volunteers as a tour guide, training instructor, fund raiser and photographer aboard the museum battleship USS IOWA in San Pedro.
